Phil Callery
The Devil’s Chestnut

February 27th - March 24th, 2024

A group exhibition organized collaboratively by Entrance and Phil Callery at 202 S Ave 19 Los Angeles, California featuring work by Erika Ceruzzi, Phil Davis, Sara Gernsbacher, Kate Hall, JPW3, Mariko Makino, Carmel Ni, Jack Shannon, Ravenne Swaner, Z. Susskind, and Zora Moniz and a live performance by Mayako XO.

“The air is colder when I breathe in through my nose. It enters my lungs and comes back out of my mouth warmly releasing whatever it was I am keeping inside. Air, of course, but something else is set free. My feet dredge in the damp sand kicking up grains as I lift and sinking back down with every forward step. My hands have no feeling, numb and resisting the warmth of my pockets for as long as possible, a sacrifice to forage and touch and photograph. I walk towards the shore caught by a glimmering, black, minuscule spiked caltrop lost in the muddy grey ripples of sand and water. The reason I am here. The water is no longer cold as I dip my hands in and out, grasping, sand on my fingertips and under my nails, hoping to be stabbed by its horns to let me know my fingers are not yet frozen.

When I breathe in cold air, my warm exhale is fate. Stripped of all its nutrients, this breath as bare as love.”
