Mariko Makino
Rest Area

November 28, 2018 – December 31, 2018

Mariko Makino’s Rest Area is the culmination of a long term residency in Entrance’s workshop, where she has developed her sculptural practice which primarily encompasses neon lights whose sinuously shaped, ikebana influenced forms emit a prismatic glow that create immersive atmospheric environments.

Born in New York and raised in Tokyo, Makino returned to the States and brought with her the aesthetic sensibilities she garnered from her childhood in Japan. Makino originally trained as a chef and brings the ephemeral experiential notions of crafting food, as well as her love of communal meals, to her approach to sculpture which privileges shared experiences around light, color and form. Makino bends the neon herself with the intention that it can be comfortably lived with in the home environment, unlike from traditional neon signage.

Rest Area is Markino Makino’s debut solo exhibition.
